A huge contingent of SBG Idaho Growing Gorillas and adult competitors traveled to Farmington, Utah Saturday, September 30th, for the North American Grappling Association’s fall event. Kids, adults, and coaches showed incredible skill and poise in every match, and came back to Boise with plenty of hardware in hand. The hard work that everyone has been putting in during training was on full display, and we are incredibly proud of each and every competitor and coach for their help and performances throughout the long day of competition! Special shout out to our extended Tribe at SBG Elko for their fantastic performances as well!

Congrats to all and we look forward to continuing our winning ways at the next tournament!

SBG Idaho Places 3rd in “Best of Boise”!!!

BOB

The results are in for the 2017 Boise Weekly “Best of Boise” winners, and SBG Idaho finished in 3rd place for “Best Local Gym” in Boise!!! We finished behind first place winner, the Treasure Valley YMCA, and runner-up Axiom Fitness, both of which are established gyms with huge member bases in Boise. We are excited not only to place, but to be the only Martial Arts facility represented in the category! We want to thank every part of our Tribe for making this possible- our coaches and staff who help make our gym a safe, fun, challenging place to learn and develop, and our members for entrusting us with your growth and development physically, mentally, and emotionally. The Tribe and community we have here at SBG Idaho is what sets us apart from every other gym in Idaho, and we look forward to taking the top spot next year!!!

Coach Stephen has made huge strides in his game, as evidenced in his last bout and we look forward to seeing him finish the drill once again on Saturday!!!

GBC Idaho Chipotle Fundraiser!!!

flyer

Sunday, October 15th, SBG Idaho and Chipotle will be holding a fundraiser for the Gorilla Booster Club of Idaho!

The Gorilla Booster Club of Idaho is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, with the goal of helping individuals grow physically, mentally, and emotionally through competitive endeavors. Our athletes here at SBG Idaho travel far and wide to test themselves in BJJ, boxing, kickboxing, and MMA. Funds raised help cover costs such as hotels, gas/travel, and entry fees, which can add up and make competition a very real financial burden. By presenting a flyer or photo of the flyer in this post, between 4pm and 8pm, 50% of the proceeds from your meal will go to help raise funds for SBG Idaho adult and Growing Gorilla youth competitors. This is a great way to refuel after a weekend of knowledge and training at SBG’s Fall Camp here in Boise, and also support your Tribe!!!

We hope to see lots of hungry individuals on Sunday, October 15!!!

SBG Idaho Athlete and Coach, Shino VanHoose (6-5 MMA, 1-1 IFC), made her return to the Invicta FC Cage, Thursday, August 31st, and left with her first win with the promotion! VanHoose took on Alyse Anderson (3-1 MMA, 0-1 IFC) in an Atomweight (105 lb) bout. The fight begins with both women trading strikes, with VanHoose landing the cleaner, harder shots. Anderson clinches and presses VanHoose against the cage. VanHoose does a great job defending the takedown attempts with double underhooks. Anderson finally secures a takedown, but VanHoose is up immediately. Anderson shoots again and manages to secure another takedown, but is immediately snared in a VanHoose guillotine choke. Anderson frees herself from the choke, but makes no real attempt at offense from the guard and is stood up by the referee. The two women trade strikes again until Anderson takes Vanhoose down with a trip. Anderson looks to advance position, however VanHoose does a great job scrambling to her feet, and ends the round with a flurry of punches and knees that send Anderson reeling to the cage as the horn sounds!

Round 2 sees VanHoose opening up more with her striking, her right hand is connecting frequently to the head of Anderson. Anderson times a VanHoose knee and secures a trip takedown. VanHoose regains closed guard and starts landing elbows and palm strikes from her back, while neutralizing any offense from Anderson, who seems content to stay in closed guard without advancing. Strangely, the referee allows Anderson to spend the remainder of the round chest-to-chest, trapped in VanHoose’s closed guard, and making virtually no attempt to posture up to strike or pass guard.

VanHoose resumes her striking assault in round 3, causing Anderson to shoot immediately for another takedown, but VanHoose defends and beautifully reverses right to mount! Shino roughs her opponent up with punches and elbows from top, causing Anderson to give up her back. VanHoose attempts an armbar that fails and ends with her in closed guard. Shino does a great job defending and again Anderson makes no attempt to advance, prompting the referee to stand both women up. VanHoose picks apart the visibly tired Anderson with punches and kicks, causing Anderson to clinch VanHoose again. Vanhoose reverses the clinch but gives up an underhook allowing Anderson the opportunity to take VanHoose’s back. Vanhoose defends well and scrambles to top position, ending the round raining punches down in Anderson’s guard! It was an exciting back and forth contest with both women having their moments. In the end, Shino was awarded the split decision victory (28-29, 30-27, 29-28) by virtue of her superior striking and more aggressive grappling!

We’re incredibly proud of the work Shino has put in over the past few months and are excited to see that effort pay off with an exciting victory on the big stage! A huge thanks to all of Shino’s coaches, training partners, and every member of the SBG Idaho Tribe for their support!!!
