Ryan didn’t intend to redirect his future when he went to check out a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class with a friend who was writing an article on the subject. But he was compelled by the intelligence and grace of the sport, and returned to train again the following day. That was in 2007, under black belt Jon Friedland in Ryan’s home state of Wisconsin. Ever since then Ryan has been an avid student and competitor in BJJ, and describes it as one of the most valuable aspects of his life. Ryan currently hold the rank of Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which was awarded to him by SBG President, Matt Thornton in 2018.
Ryan has spent many years touring as a musician, which has allowed him to gather Jiu Jitsu knowledge from training partners in different states, countries, and continents.
